Still really enjoying a re-read of Janette Oke's books. I like Josh's story - it's a nice, quiet, light read.

I loved this book! I think it was my favorite of Tessa Afshar's thus far. I loved how she explored the cultural aspects of the story of Ruth as well as the emotional arc of the characters. Just lovely.

I like Tessa Afshar's books a lot, and I particularly enjoy the historical details. I found Harvest of Rubies to be compelling with well-developed characters. For me, though, this sequel fell short. The plot points seemed a bit contrived and a good portion of the book read like someone telling a story rather than inviting the reader into it.I like Tessa Afshar's books a lot, and I particularly enjoy the historical details. I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer, and I'm enjoying this series. She does a good job of developing Josh's voice as he grows, and she touches on interesting family and community dynamics.

I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I loved them as a girl and am happy to find they still are an entertaining and light read. This is the second installment in the Love Comes Softly series. It feels a bit rush pacing wise near the end, but otherwise it's a fun add to Marty and Clark's adventures.I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I have just discovered Tessa Afshar's books, and I am so thrilled with them! I love how she weaves together historical details and spiritual truth. This book tells the story of Rahab. I love how the author explores the walled off isolation of Rahab and her journey from shame to acceptance in the Lord's (and her husband's) eyes.I have just discovered Tessa Afshar's books, and I am so thrilled with them! I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I loved them as a girl and am happy to find they still are an entertaining and light read. I'm not sure if I ever read this one as a young person, but it was okay this time around. I found the main character Berta to be really unlikeable and narcissistic for much of the book. Though she does grow and develop as a character, it's a bit of a chore to be rooting for her.I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I loved them as a girl and for the most part have been happy to find they still are an entertaining and light read. This one was a big exception. I was shocked to find this story is basically Stockholm Syndrome elevated into romance! I see that the author was trying to set up some sort of star-crossed lovers idea and tried hard to make the male lead, Laramie, NOT a kidnapper, abusive, etc., but it didn't work. Instead, it felt like much of the novel centered around elevating a naive young woman's mistreatment and how she then fell for her captor. I hope I never read this one as a young person!I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I loved them as a girl and am happy to find they still are an entertaining and light read. I really liked the historical details in this one and the way Ms. Oke imagined the emotional consequences of mail-order bride phenomena. However, about two-thirds of the way through the book, the interesting details stopped, and it became a bit of a cluttered telling of which babies came next and how Kathleen and Donnigan became Christians. It was a nice story, but I was hoping for more of the same interesting historical details throughout.I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer.
