i enjoyed this read it was gory but i liked the novel. Not for everyone as there was alot of s and m content.
I generally love mystery and suspense novels, and honestly they usually tend to center around a missing or abducted/murdered girl. This novel was no different in that aspect, but it was HIGHLY graphic. So much so that I wanted to put the book down. I forced myself to keep reading because I wanted to know if the villain got what was coming to him in the end. I also found some of the plot points outlandish and the protagonists scheme seems to work out a little too well in the end, and relies on a few coincidences for her to do so. Overall, I'd pass on this book if you are bothered in any way by graphic depictions of rape, torture, murder, general violence against women.
I hope this horrifies readers. Or, is this what we have become? Voyuers?? Sorry, I don't want all the gory details.... which I believe only encourage and give ideas to those warped minds.
I was hoping to find a Gillian Flynn read-a-like, but was a bit disappointed with this dark psychological thriller. This tense and twisty story connects the unsolved cases mysterious disappearances of two young women. Warning: this book contains graphic and gruesome descriptions of extreme violence against women.
I was so excited to read this book because I heard fantastic reviews from friends and online. The plot was intriguing, but it wasn't something I couldn't put down. It actually took me awhile to get through. I wasn't able to root for the main characters because they kind of annoyed me. I enjoy thriller novels, but this was one was only OKAY.
No way! I felt like this was writtened for a movie script, not Karin Slaughter's fans! I wanted to rip it up, but I have to give it back to library.
This book kept me on my toes! I wanted to keep reading to the end to make sure justice was served. It was...but the path to get there was so dark and twisted that I would hesitate to recommend this book. It is not for the faint of heart! If you can handle very dark, violent themes and love a thriller - this is the book for you. If you're like me - a more casual fan of the thriller / suspense genre, I would say to skip this one in favor of a less intense read like "The Couple Next Door."
SUCH A GREAT READ!! This book had me scared, empathetic, overjoyed, just an array of emotion. It is beautifully written and detailed very well. Pretty Girls is just the book the keeps on giving.
This was much too graphic for my liking, but I felt I needed to read to the end to resolve the images that had been placed in my head. Characters were a little too "convenient" in their discovery and secondary characters were not well-fleshed out.
This book was incredible. My very first thought after finishing it, was I wished I could start it all over again (and I never reread books). If you aren't a fan of graphic images / scenes than maybe pass on this. It can be extremely graphic in parts but it is such a beautifully crafted story. I absolutely loved it. And I seriously find myself thinking about the last chapter all the time. If you are a mystery / thriller book lover, read this!!
Quite a disturbing and gruesome novel, however I could not put it down. Slaughter is a master of engaging and thrilling writing and this novel is a shining example of her style.
The only good thing about this book were the letters a Dad wrote to his missing daughter. I found the book disturbing. Plus the 2 remaining sisters were just too far fetched smart. wished I wouldn't have finished it but it had such good reviews and the mother made such a recovery.... Really the wife had no idea after being married for 20 years ....bad fairy tale
While this book was undoubtedly intense and gruesome, it was also a story about family and strength. It was very touching and moving in just the same way that it was violent. This is thanks to Slaughter's ability to describe, not only a scenario, but a feeling. 4 and 1/2 stars because it was a bit unnecessarily lengthy. But Pretty Girls is a fantastic multidimensional psychological thriller. I am looking to reading more of Ms. Slaughter's novels, as well.
Entertaining, fast-paced, and despite some really big leaps in logic and out-of-the-hat solutions, it was a good read.
This was an excellent book - but as other have said -not for the faint of heart. There were twists and turns that you could not have imagined as this started. Who were the good guys and who were not? This kept you going to the very end and this book and despite the subject matter it could not be put down. Even though this is not based on a true story I believe that unfortunately there are true stories just as despicable. Very good read and I will be finding additional books by this author, as this was well worth the time.
Not for the faint-hearted. A gruesome tale of death at the hands of a psychopath. Those left behind not knowing who to trust. Some nights I couldn't read on, a psychological thriller of the highest order.
I will be reading more of Karin Slaughter's novels.
Very disturbing read but that also made it a page turner. I could not put this book down! Gruesome does not usually bother me but there were parts in this book that made me cringe. Overall though it was an excellent book and very suspensful at times.
It's my own fault for continuing to read this book til the end but this subject matter makes me ill.
I think I need therapy after reading this book. It was a very interesting story line with a few mind-blowing twists.
Warning: It is very gruesome and might eliminate your faith in humanity. :(
