Swashbuckling pirate story which reads like a thriller. Last Crichton book. Lacks the scientific premise found in his better books.

One of the weaker Chrichton novels. You can see why he put it in a drawer and chose not to release it... until his estate did. It feels half finished and seems to have been padded for length with some silly bits in the last third. But you…

Great read. Once the trip takes place it's hard to put down.

This rollicking tale is chock full of blackguards, privateers, seamen, whores, villainous Spaniards, kraken, betrayal, hurricanes, cannibals, and more. The plot is strictly B movie, but it’s full of swashbuckling action. The squeamish…

A great rollicking ride of a book, Chrichton builds fantastical characters for a true piratical adventure. I'm very impressed with the amount of research he put into this book, yet it reads easily and smoothly. Definitely recommended for…

So much reminds me of Captain Jack Sparrow, of whom I am a fan. A rollicking good read.

This book had all the required elements of a great Pirate/Privateer story. It was funny, exciting, and raw often all contained on a single page. Must read for M.C. fans

I enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. Agree with some of the previous comments. Yes it seemed not quite finished ( or maybe I just wanted more!) and some parts were a little rushed. Very violent and includes a few sex scenes but not…

Okay story with great action scenes but reads like a movie outline and not a complete novel. Could have been great read if he had put more of his creative genius into it.

I liked it. Not Crichton's best, but still very entertaining. I have a feeling that had this been published before his death it would have been more polished.

Sure not one of his better books. He must have been short of money to write this one.

Quick read, kinda predictable, with pretty shallow characters. Good for an afternoon on the beach...

Excellent read! Crichton can't help but brag that he is a student of EVERYTHING. RIP Michael Crichton: you will truly be missed.

Good but not great. Michael Crichton wrote some great novels, but this one felt a bit unfinished.
