On a snowy Friday night in 1979, just hours after making love for the first time, Richard's girlfriend, high school senior Karen Ann McNeil, falls into a coma. Nine months later she gives birth to their daughter, Megan. As Karen sleeps through the next seventeen years, Richard and their circle of friends reside in an emotional purgatory, passing through a variety of careers--modeling, film special effects, medicine, demolition--before finally reuniting on a conspiracy-driven super-natural television series. But real life grows as surreal as their TV show as Richard and his friends await Karen's reawakening . . . and the subsequent apocalypse.

Engrossing, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful, this one of my all time favourites. A book worth reading more than once.

Quite possibly one of the weirdest/most terrible books I have read. It showed great promise with the concept and where Coupland could have taken it... I agree with Mnemonic... "WTF" was a very common thought while I was reading it. I remained hopeful that it would improve and never did. I really loved his other book "Worst. Person. Ever." and found it very funny and an easy read... this was not even close to the same style of writing and was very disappointing.

The premise of the book was very promising. The idea of being 17 one day and in your 30s the next, in a body that is a shadow of your former self, is something to think about. Though it is thought provoking at times, I couldn't properly digest the "big event" that happens and what follows. I don't know how many times I said "WTF?" while reading. I said it once, and I'll say it again, I hate it when the big reset button is used as a plot device. However, one can appreciate the book for its ideas on our current culture, our continuous search for meaning and value of our lives, and our obsession with sensationalism and celebrities.

My all time favorite book! I have actually read it every summer for the past decade!
Douglas Coupland is a genious!
An easy and entertaining story about young love and growing up! It comments on severla modern issues plaguing society!
I would give it ten stars if possible!

I had a hard time putting this book down. Douglas Coupland is the only author that can put me into this unexplicable mind set...

A dark somber story built around signs that the world is coming to an end. A boy and girl have a romantic night together, and she falls into a coma for two decades after but produces a child. A haunting story.
