1900. Young pianist Catherine Wainwright flees the fashionable town of Dayton, Ohio in the wake of a terrible scandal. Heartbroken and facing destitution, she finds herself striking up correspondence with a childhood admirer, the recently widowed Oscar Williams. In desperation she agrees to marry him. But when Catherine travels to Oscar's farm on Galveston island, Texas a thousand miles from home she finds she is little prepared for the life that awaits her. The island is remote, the weather sweltering, and Oscar's little boy Andre is grieving hard for his lost mother. And though Oscar tries to please his new wife, the secrets of the past sit uncomfortably between them. Meanwhile for Nan Ogden, Oscar's housekeeper, Catherine's sudden arrival has come as a great shock. For not only did she promise Oscar's first wife that she would be the one to take care of little Andre, but she has feelings for Oscar which she is struggling to suppress. And when the worst storm in a generation descends, the women will find themselves tested as never before.

An utterly riveting read that twines a budding romance/marriage of convenience with the worst storm in our nation's history. While my heart hoped for the best for Catherine and Oscar, my heart also raced with dread as the hurricane made landfall. Vivid descriptions made the action very real. Both the personal and the historical aspects were equally engrossing. Tender hearts will be wooed by the promise of a second chance at love while disaster enthusiasts will relish its historical detail. It's a double win if you're both. 4.5 stars.

After experiencing the quality of writing of Ann Weisgarber's latest novel, " The Glovemaker," my appetite for beautifully crafted literary historical fiction was at a peak. Since this is my favorite genre, and since I am a native Texan, I don't know how I could have missed her previous work "The Promise." The author has a unique ability to create character-driven stories while maintaining the suspense of a mystery novel and staying true to the history of the era. Ms Weisgarber is equally adept at portraying the heart of her characters, while deftly touching the heartstrings of her reader.

Have you heard the expression "There is not enough room for two women under the same roof"? You feel that tension in this story. But that's not all! There is guilt, shame, jealousy, heartache, love, and adjusting to becoming a step-parent. And then the true story of the worst disaster in American history. It's a real page turner
