The central character's repeatedly stupid choices (especially the one that drives the story - it is unbelievable that she would believe what anyone - certainly someone who had been repeatedly and sadistically cruel to her - says to her, with no careful analysis or attempts at confirmation) seriously decreases any emotional reaction one feels at the denouement. Not worth the time it takes to read this lengthy novel.
