Jeffery Deaver, "the master of manipulation" (Associated Press) and "the most creative, skilled and intriguing thriller writer in the world." (Daily Telegraph, UK) returns with the new, long-awaited, Kathryn Dance thriller.

A tragedy occurs at a small concert venue on the Monterey Peninsula. Cries of "fire" are raised and, panicked, people run for the doors, only to find them blocked. A half dozen people die and others are seriously injured. But it's the panic and the stampede that killed; there was no fire.

Kathryn Dance—a brilliant California Bureau of Investigation agent and body language expert—discovers that the stampede was caused intentionally and that the perpetrator, a man obsessed with turning people's own fears and greed into weapons, has more attacks planned. She and her team must race against the clock to find where he will strike next before more innocents die.

Katherine Dance Book 4

Implausible story line, characterization and dialogue.

An entertaining effort by Deaver as he tries to keep Dance's love life going through the novel but that has a twist at the end, too. The main plot has a twist as well which may not be satisfying for some readers.

Unusual and interesting subjects and short
chapters made this an easy read for me.

I liked the book but there were so many story lines and back stories that it got tedious. Hard to keep everyone straight.

I recommended Deaver to my book club and was surprised by the negative reviews. Aren't mystery writers suppose to keep you guessing? He did in this one. It looked at crowd behavior and a surprise in her children I didn't expect. My final surprise was the conclusion and explained the first part. I am a fan of Deaver and for good reason. He is great at holding your interest until the very end!

As a long time fan of Jeffery Deaver novels, I have really enjoyed his Kathryn Dance character. Not this time. I found myself skipping pages at a time to try to find something interesting to read. Kathryn herself was inexplicably treated poorly by her superiors who supposedly know her history of exemplary work. The reason that I have enjoyed past books is the use of her skill in reading body language. Halfway through the book, there had been very little of that to enjoy. I actually stopped reading this book.

If I could, I would give this book 6 stars; at times I wondered if the many plots or lines of action would cause the book to become unwieldy and loose focus, but Deaver kept it tight and controlled. Expect great characters, researched background, timely plots and social drama plus a couple of twists.

I've enjoyed all of Deavers' books. This one had lots of surprises and good plot twists. Kept my interest until the end. Interesting information on crowd behaviour had me searching the Internet for articles and videos of human stampedes. Quite fascinating.
