Based in a fictional Canadian town where legendary theatrical madman Geoffrey Tennant returns to the New Burbage Theatre Festival, the site of his greatest triumph and most humiliating failure, to assume the Artistic Directorship after the sudden death of his mentor, Oliver Welles. When Geoffrey arrives he finds that Oliver is still there, in spirit anyway, and with his guidance (and often in spite of it) Geoffrey attempts to reconcile with his past while wrestling the Festival back from the marketing department. Despite a bitter leading lady, a clueless leading man, and a scheming General Manager, he manages to stage a remarkable production of Hamlet; the play that drove him mad.

Just watched this for the second time and found it completely delightful and rewarding.

There aren't many movies, let alone series, that I have the patience to repeat, but I've watched this whole series twice, and will do so again. The three seasons are short (6, forty-five minute episodes per season) so overall it won't take long.

Like many folks, I read several Shakespeare plays in high school, and as a teacher I've watched Zeffirelli's "Romeo & Juliet" (great, except for the long-winded party scene) more times than I can recall. [There's also the DiCaprio "bling" version, which has its moments, but interestingly enough, more students prefer the classic version. But I digress...]

While it may take an episode or two to get into the groove, it's worth investing the time. Each season focuses on one or two plays, with the parallel symbolism from each sometimes leaking into the actors' lives - comedy, drama, even tragedy.
I found he intensity of the "King Lear" storyline in Season 3 compelling. Also a favorite story thread: the attempted takeover of the theatre's board of directors. I will not introduce spoilers, but will say there are some hilarious elements to this.
This is a great series on its own. Add bonus appreciation points if you have background w/ theater, Bill Shakespeare, and the world of non-profit (arts) organizations.

This comedy/drama, set at Ontario's Stratford Festival (in the guise of the New Burbage Festival) may be the best TV series ever made. It's clever, funny, moving, and unconventional. Definitely worth checking out.

Slings & Arrows" never generated much buzz, but it is one of the smartest, best acted, and most observant shows of the last several years. Set at a struggling Canadian Shakespeare company, each of the three seasons is centered around one major play ("Macbeth," "King Lear") and the drama the surrounds the productions (breakdowns, affairs, drugs). Those with a background in drama/literature will probably appreciate it even more. Guest stars include Rachel McAdams & Sarah Polley.

This really is a gem. A fantastically dark, hilarious series that delves into the wonderful world of theatre productions. A superbly acted tribute, and satire of Shakespearean theatre.

I'm a patient person. I gave it a chance and was bored with it. Part way through the 2nd episode, I stopped watching it.

great premise, good acting and some truly funny bits, but each episode must be reviewed separately ... ep. 1 sets up is a little slow and has very little comedy ep. 2 the story begins to coalesce; ep. 3 the story finally started to become interesting and I am hooked enough to see more

I LOVED this series and you will too if you ike ... drama, comedy, intrigue, Shakespeare, the lovely town of Stratford, Ontario, amazing acting from some of Canada's least known stars (Martha Burns, Steven Ouimette, and Paul Gross). Ouimette is the BEST, playing against type and Gross is serious -- and persuasive.
