Pretty good. Not a horror movie. Story not really about evil, but greed. Depp is convincing as a conniving swindler in a sea of eccentric characters who are obsessed with their own greed.
Won't make much sense if you haven't seen "The Seventh Gate" or "The Eighth Gate."
I have always enjoyed this movie--have seen it several times, its a good travelogue that the actors must enjoy doing. No matter what you think of Roman Polanski, the man can keep his actors in a row, and keeps it suspenseful
I have recommended it to others and they have enjoyed the flick.
You should read the book and all others by Perez-Reverte.
Interesting story. Depp adds his usual excellent, quirky performance. Tolerable ending. Definitely good for first time viewing. I don't know if will hold up for a second.
No, this isn't Indiana Jones. But there is something or things about this film that gets under your skin,
Maybe it's Paris, maybe it's Corso's monochromatic outfits, the images in the books or Depp's tendency to add comic moments to his otherwise dry character.
Maybe it's the inconclusive ending or the questionable soundtrack that gets under your/my skin Maybe it's Emmanuelle Seigner and her dishevelled, mismatched-outfit sexiness. And her smile.
Maybe it's the dying collectors of a dying artform who have seen better days but haven't lost their passion for books.
Maybe it's Balkan who thinks he can buy the fruits of another man's journey when it's the journey that makes the man and not the man's backers.
Maybe it's that the film has a message but it doesn't take itself or the message too seriously. But I like this film.
It's about a man with a passion for books that turns into a passion for truth (and not power) and that the man's quest is honorable while he himself is imperfect.
What I don't like about the film is that it makes you want to smoke and drink and Corso wouldn't be that thin if he drank that much. Would he?
Good color palette.
Not a bad movie. Depp was good and entertaining.
Hmm, so this was the first Roman Polanski movie I have ever watched, and well, I was a bit disappointed. I found that the plot was poorly developed. The movie is based on a book - and you can definitely tell - as there seems to be missing plot and character development, which clearly got cut to keep the length of the movie down. I thought this was going to be a bit more Indiana Jones and a little less, hmm, hokey.
