A detective and FBI agent join forces on what seems like an open-and-shut case--but a new rash of killings sends them on a pulse-pounding race against time in this intense thriller.

Michael and Megan Fitzgerald are siblings who share a terrifying past. Both adopted, and now grown--Michael is a long-haul truck driver, Megan a college student majoring in psychology--they trust each other before anyone else. They've had to. Their parents are public intellectuals, an Ivy League clinical psychologist and a renowned psychiatrist, and they brought up their adopted children in a rarefied, experimental environment. It sheltered them from the world's harsh realities, but it also forced secrets upon them, secrets they keep at all costs.

In Los Angeles, Detective Garrett Dobbs and FBI Agent Jessica Gimble have joined forces to work a murder that seems like a dead cinch. Their chief suspect is quickly identified and apprehended --but then there's another killing just like the one they've been investigating. And another. And not just in Los Angeles--the spree spreads across the country. The Fitzgerald family comes to the investigators' attention, but Dobbs and Gimble are at a loss--if one of the four is involved, which Fitzgerald might it be?

From coastal California to upstate New York, Dobbs and Gimble race against time and across state lines to stop an ingenious and deeply deranged killer--one whose dark and twisted appetites put them outside the range of logic or experience.

I have always loved James Patterson’s books, however, this book was NOTHING like his usual writing. Too unbelievable and complicated! I read for pleasure and this book is not pleasurable. I almost never give up on a book but to save my sanity I quit about 2/3 of the way through 553 pages!

If you are a fan of James Patterson's thrillers then this is one of his better ones. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers you will be doubly blessed. The storyline is well crafted and has way more twists and turns than usual. The ending is a surprise, although you sort of see it coming in the last 20 pages or so. If you are squeamish about young kids be psychologically abused, you may want to take a pass.

What a mess! It seemed there were 2 different serial psychopath stories pushed together. Micheal/Mitchell's twists & turns weren't good except to irritate the reader. I've read a lot of Patterson's books. His alone are great. Those with other writers aren't very good. Wish I bypassed this one.

It was a very confusing book. Some things/ characters were completely left unaddressed. Overall, it kept you guessing even if you weren't satisfied at the end.

Patterson should not have approved his name on this book. The book started out good but got muddy 1/3 way thru. After a while it felt like a chore to continue. Didn’t really finish and started not to care about any of the characters. Book was too long and drawn out.

I agree with Larry Klein. I used to like Patterson. Great writer with good plots. I read thru Chapter 11 (only 48 pages!). This is really off the wall.....which disappoints me because he used to be one of my "go to" authors. Try one of my new favorites....Linda Castillo.

Outstanding book! JD Barker's are always exciting and a little complicated, but well worth the read. It keeps you guessing all the a murder mystery should. I hope the reviewer above gives his other books another chance instead of returning them unread. In particular, try The Fourth Monkey series.

This book started out as a very good read. It was good enough for me to go ahead and order other books by the real author, J. D. Barker. By the time I reached the half way point, the book had turned to be a poor read and by the 2/3 point it was really dumb. That is when I quit and tried to cancel the other books that I had put a hold on. Too late so I will check them out tomorrow and return them immediately in the outside slot at the library.
