Sir Alistair Munroe, horribly maimed during his service in the French and Indian War, lives a near solitary existence in a crumbling Scottish castle until Helen Fitzwilliam, former mistress of the Duke of Lister, and her two children arrive one night and change his life forever. When the Duke steals his children away from Helen, forcing her to reveal her true past to Alistair, and a friend from Alistair's army past is back from the dead--and quite possibly involved in the betrayal that lead to the massacre of their regiment, the bliss of their relationship isn't to last.

I will keep this brief. Really great sex scenes, Alistair says the sexiest things. My two complaints are: they say some pretty messed up stuff about Native American culture and the ending was super weak--happy, but weak.

In the current climate of #me too, I found the plot line of this book particularly disturbing. Psychologically abused woman in a position of no power (aka Duke’s mistress, with HIS two children, abandoned by her family as a fallen woman), is exploited by another man (because he can and apparently because she enjoys sex). When she gets out of this dreadful situation he gets it all mansplained to him by another man and rescues her from her choices in life. Wow, historical romance has got very dark recently or have the authors run out of plots.

I was so excited for this book but unfortunately, this series has been somewhat disappointing and I'm afraid I'm getting a little bored of HR's typical tropes and plots. Hoyt tried hard to convince me to stay engaged, providing me with not one but two adorable dogs, but I've read it all before and I've met these characters before in other books and it didn't really give me a new insight into the characters etc.

The next and final book of the series is predicted to be a dud judging by the blurb and I'll only be reading it to finish the series. I'll be very surprised if it proves me wrong.
