Very good action movie, a little bloody.

The legendary Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Total Recall, Elle) takes a shot a Robert Heinlein’s penchant for militarism by loosely adapting his novel, Starship Troopers into a satire of fascism, wrapped in a splatter or be splattered, space bugs versus humans episode of Beverly Hills 902010. I remember counting the days for this movie to come out so I could make my mom take me to see it, after catching a trailer for it on a copy of Leprechaun 3. The amped-up gore and bug battles melted my heart and earned it an immediate place in my tiny VHS collection mostly composed of chunky, white vinyl, Disney cases carried over from my pre-preadolescence. As I grew older, the movie grew with me. I began to recognize its camp and enjoyed it for new reasons, until I reached adulthood and finally appreciated it for its full on satire of a world where the military takes precedent over all. The movie isn’t without its flaws, but I applaud Verhoeven for going all in on his vision and not letting off the gas to make something more approachable.

In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting.

Kinda terrible...but in a fun way. Kinda good...but in an ironic way. I couldn't tell if they made it corny on purpose or not but I appreciate the effort nonetheless. Fairly entertaining with some memorable the "brain bug" that looks like a giant oozing scrotum/anus.

Piece of crap. Look for a parody of this on Mystery Science Theater 3000. In the middle of this movie, I thought to myself, "Why make this movie?" And then it hit me; throw every Sci-Fi cliche in, add a host of B-movie actors, gratuitous bug on human violence and gore, then end it with a feel-good, gung-ho victory scene. What Hollywood producer could possibly turn down such a vehicle? Save your self a waste of two hours and go watch something ... anything else. It might atone for itself as a cult film but it's not even bad enough for that. With the exception of Neil Patrick Harris and maybe Marshall Bell, the acting was so sophomoric it resembled a poor High School play. I can't believe I watched the whole movie. Thank heavens I never read the book. It must suck.

[The Orkin Man's ultimate fantasy!]
I sort of enjoyed this, although the director was confused by Heinlein's book [he kept calling Heinlein a fascist during an interview I saw him in], and didn't grasp that RAH's book was combining a politically meritocratic system [if you didn't serve, you didn't vote] encompassing the ideal of Ancient Greek democratic concepts. RAH was somewhat taken in by the plutocracy - - I enjoyed his earlier stories when he was a radical progressive, but found his later stuff [with the possible, and I mean possible, exception of Friday] to be wanting, and exhibiting his beliefs of American Exceptionalism, but I am realistic enough to know that when RAH was aghast at the Tonkin Gulf Incident, he really believed EVERYTHING which spewed forth from the American gov't [probably believed Oswald was the presidential assassin and that farcical lone gunman junk] and he actually supported Goldwater for president - - tell me that wasn't a split from his days with that Californian radical, Upton Sinclair. [I recall reading an old magazine, while I was in the military around 1970, about Sinclair, a real radical, being invited to a Bohemian Grove gathering {where the super-rich and connected gather occasionally} and was shocked at what he heard and was offered - - another story in another old magazine weeks later I read an exact similar story, this time with religious conservative author, Taylor Caldwell - - if both she and he exhibited the same response, the plutocracy must have always been diabolical.]

Great sci-fi flick by Director Paul Verhoeven- the underlying satire is especially satisfying in such a broad action film.

Featuring some really incredible creature animation - 1997's Starship Troopers is very much like a gung-ho WW2 picture that gets transplanted into the future. This time around, high school students are encouraged to become "citizens" by enlisting in the army and eagerly serving the state.

Little do any of them realize that they will soon be engaged in a full-scale war against marauding insects of the most ferocious kind.

Warning! - Starship Troopers is definitely not for the squeamish, as it contains plenty of graphic dismemberment of both humans and insects.

Heard about this film for years but only just got around to it. I really don't see what the big deal is and got bored pretty quickly. I think that the combination of satire and fantasy is a stretch and doesn't work here.
