In 1974, previously successful manager Brian Clough takes over England's top football club Leeds United. His abrasive approach and his clear dislike of the players' dirty style of play make it certain there is going to be friction. Glimpses of his earlier career help explain both his hostility to previous manager Don Revie and how much he is missing his usual right-hand man, Peter Taylor, who loyally decided to stay with Brighton & Hove Albion.

I went to Derby in 1971, just before the events in the movie, got a job in Buxton, Derbyshire, just to the north, stayed until '76, and went to most of their matches in those years. I could have been classed a fanatic, the team was so good, and Cloughie and his mate Peter Taylor were my heroes..... These were the glory years for Derby; it was a catastrophe when he was fired, the Derby County chairman never had respect for his independent ways and even said "Even I could win as manager with this lot"; of course he had no clue why they won and why Clough and Taylor were the keys to the club's success....he was a man unto himself was Clough, brilliant but not the modern notion of a team player, which really means you give up your identity to the powers that be....Clough could never do that, and never gave in despite the painful conflicts, but he later won the European Cup with Nottingham Forest, Derby's arch-enemies....a bit of getting his own back, but Derby has never forgotten the great man and his mate, who gave them a formidable team....

I thought it was slow, like a documentary, but very well done. As others have said, this is not a sports movie for jocks, it's a character study of a leader's ups and downs, he just happens to be a sports guy.

I have absolutely no interest in English football, or any other kind, but loved this movie. It's as much a human story as a sports movie. The relationship between Clough and his assistant manager is funny and touching. Michael Sheen is brilliant as usual.

The flashbacks and football scenes are great. His short time at Leeds (which is the main part of the movie) he just seems nuts. But I enjoyed the flick.

I'm not a sports fan, have a low tolerance for yelling and fighting and rolling in mud and cigar-smoking men in suits... Still, somehow I hung in--partly because of basic inertia perhaps, but no, it was interesting to see two battles more or less at odds: the character's battle with others and the one within himself. Not a new concept of course, but well played out.

The performance of Michael Sheen is amazing to watch. This Brian Clough was a fascinating character study. Not someone I'd want to spend a lot of time with, but someone I'd admire for his capabilities. Loved, too, Timothy Spalling and Sheen together. Palpable dynamic.

One of the greatest films about sports management ever made- the disc cover should contain an "ego alert" advisory! Sheen is phenomenal, should have received recognition from the Academy.

Good - The Damned United (2010) 98 min. Bio-pic of Brian Clough holds together nicely as a film despite him not being the most pleasant person to learn about.

Other: The lone copy of this film on Blu-ray disc available at SSF library glitches in a couple places. This is too good a movie to lose fragments and not be a bit upset.
