The whole family enjoyed this movie, and it had a good message about persevering. Parents will want to be aware there is some language, as well as the depiction of alcohol abuse by one of the player's dad. The movie is worth watching, but watch it with your kids so you can talk about it afterward.

One of the greatest if not the best sports movie made ~420

In Hoosiers, the high school basketball team that eventually wins the state championship came from the fictitious town of Hickory. Hickory High was, literally, the smallest high school in the entire state of Indiana with an attendance of only 64 boys.

The team's name was The Huskers and it housed about 6 really excellent players. The Huskers were floundering terribly, though, due to their present coach's laziness and inability to drive the team to reach its full potential. No one took The Huskers seriously. The Huskers usually lost more games than they'd win.

Then along comes the new coach (played superbly by Gene Hackman). He moves right in and takes over coaching The Huskers, full-time. He realizes immediately the potential of these boys and, literally, drives them and himself to near exhaustion to prove that, sure enough, they have what it takes.... And they do.

With a number of disappointing set-backs to contend with - The coach's efforts eventually pay off and The Huskers make Indiana Basketball History.

To be honest, I'm definitely no Basketball fan. No way, Jose.... I would've never thought that I'd actually enjoy watching Hoosiers as much as I did. But I did. I sure did. In fact, I even viewed it for a 2nd time.

I think that a big part of Hoosiers' appeal is that its story is based (loosely) on actual events that surrounded a real Basketball Championship set back in 1956. This championship involved high school teams in the state of Indiana. It seems that back in the 1950s even high school basketball was taken very, very seriously.

To be sure, there were some absolutely exhilarating moments in Hoosiers. I got caught up in a lot of it, myself. I actually found myself cheering for The Hickory Huskers when they finally began to play "real" basketball and beat the pants off of their opponents.... (*Watch video trailer*)

*Special Note* - For anyone who's interested in reading the real story that inspired Hoosiers, then check out Greg Guffey's well-researched book called "The Greatest Basketball Story Ever Told". Believe me, it's a worthwhile read and it contains an excellent photo section, showcasing the real team that made Indiana Basketball History. VPL has a copy.

"Hoosiers" would not be a brilliant movie without Gene Hackman. He is wonderful as a small town high school basketball coach. Everything we have come to know about a small town seems to come true. They live for the local sports teams and nothing makes them prouder than seeing them win over a larger school. "Hoosiers" will make you cheer from your seat and become a member of the small town supporters of "Hickory High Basketball"!

Even if basketball isn't your thing, this is an excellent movie on so many levels. Totally recommend it!

This is a 1986 sports film written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh.
Loosely based on the Milan High School team that won the 1954 state championship, it tells the story of a small-town Indiana high school basketball team that wins the state championship.
Gene Hackman plays Norman Dale, a basketball coach whose checked past has led him to a last-chance position with a last-chance team.
Although the townspeople nearly have him fired, Dale perseveres with a gritty demeanor and an unwavering passion for coaching.
With fast-paced excitement, edge-of-your-seat suspense, breath-taking actions, this is one of the best sports movies.
