Again, Cynthia Rylant has presented an event from the past and made it real to the readers. I love her delving into history and this is a good Christmas story. But in this book, the illustrations are the best part. Rylant's story is written very briefly, probably because she only had the specific of the wealthy stranger and the train. If there had really been a boy becoming doctor, she would have found out about him and provided more details. But you really must see these pictures. Chris Soentpier is an extraordinary artist.

My favorite Christmas story ever. Have a tissue handy - it will make you cry! I first discovered this as a short story in the author's collection "Children of Christmas." In 1997, it was published as a stand alone picture book. If you plan on reading it aloud to a group - practice first, just to make sure you can keep emotions in check!
