The book that I am going to introduce to you is The Silmarillion, which many of you may not hear before, but if I mention the Lord of the Rings, then many of you will be familiar with this. It is written by J.R.R.Tolkien in 1977 and published posthumously by his son, Christopher Tolkien. The story is taking place in the first age of Arda (a world that Tolkein creates), and the story happens before the storyline of the Lord of the Rings. Instead of saying this is a collection of different pieces of stories, I would call it a history book. The fate of all the characters in the story is full of grief and helplessness. You are an outsider that witness the history but there is nothing you can do to change it. However, it is also a really hard book to read because there are 50+characters who show up with similar names and it will take a long time to memorize all of them. In this "history book", you will learn more about the birth of the world(Arda), the internal strife of the Elves, the greed for the Silmarillion (the most beautiful gem), the different languages that Tolkien created, the conspiracy of Melkor (main antagonist), and finally, the downfall of Númenor(the ancestor of Aragorn from LOTR). Overall, if you are a Tolkien fan or a fan of Peter Jackson's movie, the Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings, then The Silmarillion is your choice! -Christy, Grade 10
