After losing her fiancée to war, Nela Farley discovers she has the uncanny ability to understand what cats are thinking. One winter day she arrives in Craddock, Oklahoma to help out her younger sister by substituting at her job. Nela moves into the garage apartment where her sister is cat sitting and meets Jugs, the cat. Jugs tells her he misses his former mistress, Miss Marian Grant, who recently died when the second step rolled as she left for morning jog just a week earlier. What? Is Nela's grief causing mental issues or is Jugs really talking to her?
