Let me get this straight. 9 individuals check into a retreat / health spa and are given dangerous hallucinogenics without their knowledge or consent. They are then subjected to psychological torture. The abuser is given a short jail term and everyone else lives happily ever after?????? This story is repulsive to me. It justifies torture in the name of science or some "higher good". I guess we could extrapolate that the medical experiments done by the Nazi doctors, especially Josef Mengele were done in the interest of "science" and a greater good. I am sure that some of the people who managed to survive this experience had a "life changing" result and perhaps appreciated life more than they ever had before. Case closed. Torture in the name of science is justified. NOT!! As a clinical psychologist I find the idea that everyone subjected to psychological torture and dangerous drugs goes on the live a happy life is so preposterous that I cannot fathom why an author would even write such a dangerous novel. Many individuals live a painful life subsequent to psychological torture. If someone could have prevented or alleviated that torture it would be criminal not to do so. Yet our perpetrator is free to continue performing her experiments under no supervision. Some research is being done with LSD, psilocybin, MDMA (street name "ecstasy") for treatment of psychiatric disorders . This is being done under medical supervision, with client consent, and is not paired with psychological torture. Not only do I not recommend this book, as stated before, I find its premise obscene.
