I would say that Ian McEwan is the literary equivalent to the pop singer, Van Morrison. Just like Van, he did some good work in the 70's (His last work that interested me was"'The Cement Garden" (1978).) since than, both Ian & Van have produced mostly hack work. "On Chesil Beach" fits into that category. In this item, the main characters are either pseuds (Flo & her family) or wanna-be's (Eddie.) Eddie's family was just tooo much and Flo's were a bunch of hideous prats. I guess you could categorize Flo & Eddie as English versions of the characters in a Bujalski movie, only more repressed. Despite all this, the movie is almost bearable until the last 15 minutes, when it turns into a fast-forward bathos-fest. Docked two notches for that inclusion.
