Let me start by saying that I wanted to like this book. That said, I just couldn't do it. McFadyen's overuse of metaphors in his narrative gets old really fast due largely to the fact that the metaphors are terrible. His characters are unlikable and engender no strong feelings whatsoever in the reader, aside from a mirroring of the contempt these characters seem to hold for the victims of violent crime. In reading their dialogue you're left believing that they think more of the killer than his victims, which I find to be highly suspect. I'll give him that there is about 20 pages near the end that are good, but getting there is the real torture in this book.
