Quiet and shy, Rowan just doesn't fit in with the bold, brave people who live in his village. He prefers to stay with the gentle bukshahs out in the fields. They are quiet animals who love him for who he is and he would do anything for them. The day the river stops flowing to his village he gets a chance to prove his love for them. Without the river the bukshahs and the village will die. Only the bravest of the brave will take the journey to the top of the mountain to face the dragon at the river's source and start the waters flowing again. Rowan is not the bravest of the brave but he has to go because the local wise woman cursed him and now he's the only one who can read the map. If Rowan puts down the map or someone tries to copy it the map disappears. Terrified of the dangerous journey Rowan straps on his pack and starts the impossible climb with a team of villagers who are afraid of nothing or so they think. The mountain is like a video game with each challenge knocking someone off team until only the best make it to the top. Giant spiders? Swamp ghosts? Deep dark caves? Which thing would you fear the most? Once the climb begins there is no going back with any safety and it's an action packed adventure all the way to the top. Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda is the first in the fantasy adventure series by the author of Deltora Quest which is also very exciting.
